Staples such as pasta and rice are impossible to find, home food delivery slots are filled up weeks in advance, and people queue up early in the morning to do their essential shopping. Health workers struggle to find food after long shifts at work. There are also carers trying to buy food for someone with dementia at home and family members doing the shopping for over 70s or those with health problems that keep them in isolation. Food banks are busy ensuring those who struggle to afford food do not go hungry.

As a 50 something mum, I have never had to live with rationing of any kind. Rationing of eggs, flour and sugar was a situation I only read about in novels of the post-World War II period. Now healthy people with enough food at home are being asked to stay home and limit shopping as much as possible so that those who are truly vulnerable have access to food. One way to stretch meals is to search the back of the cupboard to find the lentils and pulses that have likely been there for a while. Do you have these in your cupboard as well? If so, may I challenge you to cook them up and eat them?

Tonight my family are eating the split peas that have been in the cupboard for over a year. In the past year there have been many reasons not to bother cooking the split peas. Today I need to cook them. Once the split peas are soaked for hours and boiled with a bit of ham, potatoes, carrots and any other vegetables we have, they will provide more than one hearty meal for my family of 6.  Next to cook on my list is an old bag of pearl barley…

Jesus said that we should ask God for our daily bread.
